Search Engine Optimisation What is it?

To get your visitors to your website, you need to rank highly in search engines, like Google, Yahoo and Bing.

Currently Google is the daddy of all search engines, claiming over 80% of all searches made on the internet, so it is vital that your website is optimised well to ensure search engines (Google etc) find your website and siplay it prominently.

This is known as search engine optimisation

So how do I optimise my website for search engines

Firstly, you need to understand that the search engines rank individual web pages and not websites which means that you can target different customers to different webpages on your website.

There are two main factors in ensuring that you site ranks well in the search engines

  1. On Page Content
What is on the particular webpage
On Page content accounts for 20% towards search ranking
  2. Off Page Content
What other webpages say about your webpage
Off page content accounts for 80% towards search ranking

Main On Page Content Factors

  1. Having the key words in the web address
  2. The title of the page
  3. the key words are about 3-5% of the total number of words on the page (keyword density)
  4. the key words are near the start of the page
  5. the key wordsare in a header 1 tag
    eg
Search Term Here

  6. the keywords are contained in a link on a page
  7. The page is 500+ words
  8. The age of the website

Main Off Page Content Factors

The number one factor in getting your page ranked highly is by getting as many quality inbound links that point to the page using the keywords as the anchor text.

Quality links means links from websites that have good authority on the topic that the link relates to. It is of little value in having a link from a car dealerwebsite to a soccer website.

Inbound links can be achieved through

  1. Article Marketing
  2. Blog Commenting
  3. Buying links from Authority Sites

For an example of an Article that is used for SEO, see one of my articles that is used to get my webpage to #1

Article Link (opens a new window) –>>How to Play Soccer

The article

  1. Has a keyword density of 3-5%
  2. Uses "How to Play Soccer" as the anchor text for the webpage
  3. Is on a website that is considered an Authority Website
